Installation and Tips
Suggested instructions for easy installation of your Rain Barrel.

Standard and Dual Barrels
1. You will first have to decide where you want your rain barrel to be placed. You can either place it directly below the downspout or several feet away because of the accessibility of the flex spout.
2. Prepare the base of the ground where the rain barrel will sit. This is very important as a full barrel weighs over 400 pounds. Specific care must be taken to make sure that the surface that the barrel will sit on is level so that it does not tip over. You can place the barrel directly on the ground and it will be fully functional. Remember that a rain barrel works on gravity and if slightly raised (12") it will increase the water pressure. One suggestion would be to dig out a small (16" x 16") section of dirt and place a durable stepping stone as well as fill it with drain gravel or put it up on one of our heavy duty wood stands with a strong and level base below. It is also recommended that you consult with your local hardware store or garden center professional to see what would work best in your specific situation.
3. Now you can cut your downspout. To make an accurate mark, it is recommended that you find the height at which satisfies your rain barrel. Place the barrel at that height next to the desired downspout. Make sure the flex spout is secure in the top of the barrel and measure a line 1 1/2" down from the top of the flex spout, on the desired downspout itself. (There is a line on the flex spout that will help guide in this measurement) This measurement and cut of the downspout will allow the downspout to set inside the flex spout while also allowing room enough to slide the flex spout up and out of the barrel if and when needed to remove the barrel. This will allow you to be able to access the screen in the top of the barrel and clean it out of debris when needed. Using a hacksaw, start to cut at the line made on the desired downspout until the section is removed. If you do not feel comfortable cutting the downspout, please refer to a professional. Remember that the edges of the downspout may be sharp once cut. Save the cut section of downspout for later use or winter re-attachment. You may also need to detach one section of the lower downspout for the house. It is usually held in by a small bracket and a nail.
4. Now you are ready to set the barrel in place. Once the desired base is ready to go, place the empty barrel on it and insert the flex spout into the top of the barrel and into the bottom of the downspout. Remember to direct the  overflow drain tube away form the house. Also make sure that the spigot it turned off for the moment.
5. You are now ready to harvest
your Free Rainwater!

Helpful Tips

1.  You can either leave the rain barrel hooked up over the winter or you can detach it and store it away. If you detach it, it is recommended that you re-attach the piece of downspout that was cut off using a downspout adapter that you can purchase at any local home center.
2.  It is recommended that you clean out the rain barrel once a year. To do so, take a screw driver and a small hammer and loosen and twist off one of the bung tops and flush it out with a garden hose and drain. The bung top will screw back on and secure.
3.  Do not loosen or tighten the spigot. It is secure in the right place and leaks may follow any tampering.
4.  Do not attempt to move barrel while full of water. It is very heavy and could hurt someone if it tips over!
5.
You can touch up the paint with a Krylon Fusion Paint or Plastic Specific Paint from Rustoleum available at your local hardware store.
6.  It is recommended to attach a 12' hose to the spigot for easy access watering.
7.  Direct the overflow drain tube away form the house and foundation.
8. The Rain Water in the Rain Barrel is NOT meant for drinking water. Do not drink the rain barrel water.
